Chapter Fifteen
âI canât do it anymore,â I moaned to Cerulea, staring at the carved ceiling of my chamber.
Over the past few weeks, Iâd been victim to numerous âdatesâ with Kono as he tried to win my affections. At one point, heâd had a feast prepared with some of my favorite foods. I didnât have the heart to tell him I much preferred the rich foods I was starting to taste around the courts. Orchidasi food just tasted bland compared to the Basid and Crassulan meals. Another Astrid Bloom had been sitting on the picnic blanket and Iâd rolled my eyes. I was certain my mother had someone coaching Kono on my favorite things, but the problem with my mother was, she didnât really understand the things I liked. Instead, the dates Kono ended up taking me on seemed to be things my mother would have liked for me. I could hardly look Kono in the eye when he bowed before me, making me flush, as he pulled out as much charm as he could.
It hadnât worked, and here I was lamenting to Cerulea about it.
âHeâs a good louloudi,â Cerulea pointed out. âYou could do worse.â
âBut thatâs not why I want to be with someone. I want love. I want to feel like. . . like I canât be apart from him. Like I need him. Like if I donât go see them every day, Iâll lose a piece of myself.â
âLike you feel about the humans.â Cerulea smiled gently as I grew quiet.
On the bed, Kono had sent up an odd succulent arrangement, one that had instructions. Iâd never seen a floral gift with instructions. Weâd followed the list, breaking the stems a certain way, and realized with surprise that the succulents had nectar inside them. We were meant to pluck the flowers from the arrangement as if they were ripe berries and lick the nectar from within. We both returned to that task as I thought about it, the sweet liquid addictive.
I glanced around for Olis, knowing he was around somewhere but not seeing him at the moment. âI do love them, but I donât know what to do with that love,â I whispered.
Cerulea was quiet, staring at me and I suddenly felt like I was under scrutiny. âGo to them, then,â she whispered. âTake the oak, though. Iâm scared Olis is getting wise that you have another way to get around.â
âHeâll never jump to the conclusion I have portal magic.â
âAre you sure?â Cerulea touched her fingers to one of the silky petals of the succulents. âOlis isnât stupid. Heâs far too bright to keep being tricked. If he eliminates the oaks enough, heâll know youâre getting around another way. And while I donât think Olis having the information is dangerous, I think him passing the information to the Queen is.â
I bit my lip and nodded. Cerulea was right. Of course, she was. Iâd have to be stealthy and take the oak. I couldnât have my mother finding out my little secret.
